Northbridge is named for its location of the north side of The Suspension Bridge. When the Bridge was originally built, in 1892, it was known as The North Sydney Bridge and in 1903, was shortened to ‘North Bridge’.
The surrounding land was once owned by Arthur Twemlow who, in 1870, built The Hermitage, a sandstone house later owned by Sir Edward Hallstrom and which stood in the area now called Hallstrom Close. Another early settler in the area, Henry Hocken Bligh, was mayor of Willoughby in 1869.
Northbridge is located 7 kilometres north of Sydney’s CBD and is considered one of the prime Middle Harbour suburbs.
Lying east of the Warringah freeway and sloping down to the harbour, Northbridge has many large waterfront houses, which overlook Sailors Bay and Middle Harbour on Port Jackson and also boasts several fine vantage points over Middle Harbour with Clive Park, Elizabeth Park and Hallstrom Park all offering spectacular views.
Northbridge Plaza features a supermarket, banks, grocers, butchers, bakers, chemist and a range of specialty shops, while bus routes between Northbridge and Wynard provide quick and easy public transport into the city.
Schools in the area include the St Phillip Neri Catholic Primary School, Northbridge Primary School and the Shore Preparatory School playing fields.
Demographics show 30% of residents in Northbridge are between the ages of 40 and 59, 27% between the ages of 20 and 39, 28% under 19 and19% over 60.
