Cammeray is named after the Aboriginal tribe of the “Cammeraygal” who once lived in the area. In early settlement days, it was the site of Sydney’s first quarry and many of the original buildings in old Sydney Town were constructed using sandstone blocks mined in Cammeray.
Located a mere five kilometres from the Sydney Central Business District, Cammeray is a delightful garden suburb with a variety of coves and parks ideal for Sunday picnics and bush walking.
The main thoroughfare of Miller Street is lined with restaurants and cafes, which offer a selection of Italian, Thai and Chinese cuisines, while the Green Park shopping area provides a friendly and convenient “village’” atmosphere for locals.
In the heart of the suburb lies the Cammeray golf course and Tunks Park leading down to a natural gorge and under the Suspension Bridge to a bayside boat ramp. The Bridge, built in the 1880’s and boasting ornate sandstone turrets and crenellated arches, makes for an enchanting landmark.
Residences in Cammeray cross a broad spectrum ranging from stand-alone or semi-detached federation houses, urban apartments and up-market waterfront homes. Many of the quieter streets are lined with trees and nature strips while others offer waterfront access such as Cowdroy Avenue and the end of Cammeray Road, leading down to Folly Point.
With a population well over six thousand, 42% of residents in Cammeray are between the ages of 20 and 29 and 28% between the ages of 40 and 59. The Median Property Trends for Houses and units in Cammeray show the average cost of a unit at $528,750 (with a long term growth rate of 6.9%) and of a house at $955,000 (with a long term growth rate of 6.4%)
